Black Steel Shop Building with a Loading Dock

Crossville, Tennessee has a new steel shop building on a property East Tennessee Contractors already knew well. The owner had already hired the team to build his custom home. Then he added a second scope. He wanted a black steel shop building on the same acreage, plus all of the concrete work under it. So one contractor carried both projects on one site.

Engineering the Piers Before the Steel Shop Building Arrived

A red iron frame only performs as well as the foundation it bolts to. Because of that, East Tennessee Contractors designed and engineered the piers first. Each pier had to hold its anchor bolts in exactly the right position. The crew then formed and poured the rest of the 3,360 square foot slab around them. As a result, the frame landed square, and the erection crew never had to chase a bolt that sat out of place.

A Loading Dock Built Into the Design

This shop does something most outbuildings do not. It has its own loading dock. Two overhead doors sit at dock height along one wall, with the grade dropping away below them. Because of that, a truck can back in and unload straight onto the shop floor. Meanwhile a third overhead door on the gable end opens onto a concrete apron at grade for everyday access.

One Team for the House and the Shop

East Tennessee Contractors keeps most trades in house. So the same company building the home also engineered the piers, poured the slab, and erected the steel. That single point of accountability kept both builds moving together instead of competing for the same site. Today the owner runs his business out of the shop and works from home a short walk away.
