City of Crossville Trail Bridge

Crossville, Tennessee has a new connection between two of its busiest green spaces. The City of Crossville wanted to link the Woodlawn walking trails to City Park across a wooded ravine. East Tennessee Contractors joined the project as the concrete subcontractor. So the team took on the concrete bridge construction that everything else rests on, from the first footer to the last wing wall.

Concrete Bridge Construction From the Footers Up

The work started below grade. Crews formed and poured footers measuring 50 feet by 10 feet by 2 feet deep. Those footers spread the load of the span across stable ground. Next the team formed, reinforced, and poured the abutments. Abutments hold the bridge in place and carry the weight that crosses it. Because the ravine drops off sharply on both banks, that connection had to land exactly right.

Wing Walls That Hold Back the Bank

After the abutments cured, the crew turned to the wing walls. These angled concrete walls hold back the earth on either side of each abutment. As a result, runoff moves through the channel instead of cutting into the slope. Erosion control matters here, because a creek runs directly under the crossing. The finished walls also give the approach a clean edge where the trail meets the deck.

Eight Weeks From First Pour to Final Wall

The schedule set this project apart. The city needed the entire concrete scope finished in under eight weeks. East Tennessee Contractors keeps most trades in house, so the crew moved from forming to pouring to stripping without waiting on outside subcontractors. That single point of accountability kept every pour on schedule. Today the bridge carries walkers between Woodlawn and City Park. It also gives EMS and maintenance vehicles a route across whenever they need one.
